Canadian Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio canadensis) (Rothschild & Jordan, 1906) |
Synonyms: Pterourus canadensis, Papilio glaucus canadensis, Canadian Swallowtail |
Papilio canadensis is very similar to the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, Papilio glaucus, and may be a subspecies of the latter. Unlike P. glaucus, the yellow marginal band on the underside of forewing is continuous in P. canadensis. The Canadian Tiger Swallowtail occurs in North America, from central Alaska and Yukon, eastward to northern Quebec and Newfoundland, and south to the northern United States. This species flies from May to July, usually along forest edges and in open woodlands, but also in the tundra. The caterpillar feeds on a variety of trees and shrubs, including cherry, poplar, and willow. Canadian Tiger Swallowtails often congregate at mud puddles, but also on carrion, to obtain fluids and nutrients. The images below show P. canadensis gathered at the corpse of a road killed North American Porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum).
