Whites, Sulphurs, and Yellows (Pieridae) |
The Pieridae are a large family with 4 subfamilies, 75-80 genera, and ca. 1,100 species. Distributed nearly worldwide, but are most diverse in the tropics. Some species are migratory. These are white, yellow, or orange butterflies with fully developed legs, and forked claws. Adults nectar on a variety of plants, and also imbibe minerals from moist soils. The host plants include the Fabaceae, Brassicaceae, Capparidaceae, Santalaceae, Loranthaceae, etc.
