Pontia protodice is widespread in the continuous United States and northern Mexico; occasional in Ontario. This species inhabits open areas, including dry grasslands, deserts, dry woodland edges, old fields, pastures, etc. The upperside is white with black or brown checkered pattern on the forewing; the underside with yellowish markings in the female; the wingspan 32-66 mm. Adults take nectar of mustards, composites, and alfalfa. The larvae feed on buds, flowers, and leaves of various Brassicaceae, and several species of Fabaceae and Capparaceae. P. protodice flies from March to November in temperate areas and year-round in the south.
