Owlet Moths (Noctuidae) |
The Noctuidae (owlet moths, cutworms, or armyworms) are a large lepidopteran family with 21 subfamilies, 1,090 genera and ca. 12,000 species. The Calpinae, Catocalinae, and Lymantriinae were transferred to the Erebidae. Owlet moths are distributed nearly worldwide except the Antarctic; up to 4,000 m. Adults are gray to brown, with lines or spots, although some tropical species are brightly coloured. The wingspan is usually within 20-45 mm. The caterpillars are smooth with rounded heads. Adults feed on nectar, sap, honeydew, and animal droppings; the larvae consume leaves and other plant matter, lichens, and fungi; some cutworms feed on other insects, including conspecifics.
