Silk Moths (Saturniidae)

The Saturniidae encompass 9 subfamilies, 165 genera, and ca. 2,300 species. The family is widely distributed in tropical and temperate areas around the world, but is most diverse in the Neotropics. These are medium to very large moths (the wingspan up to 150-300 mm), with wide wings and hairy bodies. Some species are brightly colored and have translucent eyespots. Adults have reduced mouthparts, and do not feed. The larvae are large (50-100 mm), often with clumps of bristles or stinging hairs. They feed on leaves of trees, shrubs, or grasses.
