Ermine Moths (Yponomeutidae) |
The Yponomeutidae contain 5-6 subfamilies, at least 32 genera and 600-900 species; distributed nearly worldwide, but most diverse in the tropics. Small to medium-sized moths (wingspan 8-31 mm) with long wings, often with fringes on the hindwings. They are white, grey or drab, frequently with dark speckles. The larvae are colorful, striped with black, white, and orange; usually gregarious, in communal silky webs.
