Burnet Moths (Zygaenidae) |
The Zygaenidae contain 3-5 subfamilies, 70-80 genera, and ca. 1,000 species. They are distributed in tropical and temperate regions nearly worldwide. Small to medium-sized, brightly coloured moths (unpalatable or toxic to many predators). The wings have a metallic sheen and are variable in shape. The majority of species are diurnal. Adults take nectar at a variety of flowers.
