Northern Short-tailed Shrew

Blarina brevicauda occurs in the northeastern North America, from southern Saskatchewan to Atlantic Canada and south to northern Arkansas and Georgia. It occurs in deciduous and coniferous forests, marshy areas, old fields and other habitats with thick leaf litter. This species is subfossorial. Northern Short-tailed Shrew feeds mostly on invertebrates (insects, earthworms, snails), but also kills and eats small vertebrates including voles, mice, salamanders, etc. Blarina brevicauda is one of the few venomous mammals.
