Shrews are small mammals with cylindrical bodies, long snouts covered with sensitive whiskers, rounded ears and small eyes. They are distributed nearly worldwide, but are absent from Australia, southern South America and many oceanic islands. The Soricidae contain 23 genera and over 350 species, and is the most speciose family of Insectivora.
