Sorex cinereus is the most widely distributed shrew in North America, where it occurs in Alaska, Canada and the northern United States. It was introduced on the island of Newfoundland in the late 1950s. Masked Shrew inhabits forests, but was also found in other habitats including tundra and grasslands. Young Sorex cinereus reach adult size by the time they leave their nests (as shown here).
