Cavies and Capybaras (Caviidae) |
The Caviidae (6 genera and 18 species) is a family of South American rodents, and includes the cavies, maras, and the capybaras. Most species are found in grasslands, savannas, dry forests or deserts, but the capybaras are semi-aquatic. Caviids have large heads, short ears, and no visible tails; they are medium to large in size. The capybara is the largest of all contemporary rodents.
