Neotoma micropus occurs in the southern Great Plains of the United States and northeastern Mexico. It inhabits mesquite savanna, thornscrub, and woodlands in semi-arid regions. It builds a bulky and conspicuous nest (sometimes >1 m in height) at the base of shrubs or large cacti (Opuntia spp.), under fallen trees, or in buildings. Cacti lobes or thorny branches are often built in the outer part of the nest. This species feeds on the blades and fruit of the prickly pear cactus and other cacti, leaves of agaves, beans and pods of mesquite, etc.
