Peromyscus maniculatus is found throughout most of North America: in Canada (south of the tree line), the United States (except the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coasts), and north and central Mexico. It inhabits virtually every habitat within its range (taiga, temperate and boreal forests, swamps and bogs, prairies, deserts, and scrublands). The species has 57 subspecies which are divided into two ecotypes: short-tailed, small-eared inhabitants of open country, and long-tailed, large-eared forest dwellers. Only two short-eared subspecies are shown on our site: P. m. luteus from Texas and P. m. bairdii (Prairie Deer Mouse) from Ontario. The Deer Mouse is omnivorous, feeding on seeds, fruits, arthropods, fungi, etc.
