Cotton Rats and allies (Sigmodontinae)

 

The subfamily Sigmodontinae is one of the most diverse groups of mammals. It includes the New World rats and mice, with at least 376 species. Many taxonomists include the Neotominae and Tylomyinae in the Sigmodontinae; when the latter subfamilies are included, the species count reaches ca. 510.
