Sciurus carolinensis is native to eastern North America: from Manitoba to southern Quebec, and south to eastern Texas and Florida. It has been introduced elsewhere on the continent, including the West Coast, and also in the British Isles, Italy, and South Africa. Eastern Gray Squirrel is predominantly gray, with a large bushy tail; however, the melanistic form is predominant in certain geographic areas, e.g., southern Ontario. This species inhabits deciduous and mixed forests, parks, urban and suburban areas. It dens in tree cavities or builds large spherical nests (dreys) of leaves and sticks in trees. Diet consists of seeds, fruits, nuts, tree buds, berries, fungi, and occasionally invertebrates, bird eggs and nestlings.
