Liliaceae (Lily)

The lily family, Liliaceae, consists of 15 genera and about 700 known species (sensu stricto) or 300 genera and 4,500 species (sensu lato). They are perennial and herbaceous. Common characteristics include flowers with parts arranged in threes: with six tepals arranged in two whorls, six stamens and a superior ovary. Recently, 114 genera with ca. 2,900 species were removed from Liliaceae to form the family Asparagaceae.
