Maianthemum canadense is a perennial species, commonly found in the understory of coniferous and deciduous forests in Canada and the northern United States (Map), from British Columbia east to Newfoundland and south to Wyoming, Illinois, and northern Georgia; 0-1,800 m. It grows to 25 cm in height; 1-3 alternate, stalkless, oval leaves; star-shaped, white flowers are in racemes (from early spring to mid-summer). Mature berries are deep translucent red, globose. This species often spreads by the rhizomes.
