Macromia illinoiensis occurs throughout eastern North America: from central Ontario and Nova Scotia to Texas and Florida. It is a large dark-brown dragonfly with a single lateral yellow stripe on each side of the thorax. The abdomen has yellow spots along its length, and is slightly clubbed in males. The eyes are bright green. It forages over streams, rivers, lakes, fens, and barrens. In the Great Lakes area, this species flies from early June to early September.
