The Macromiidae contains 4 genera and 125 species; worldwide distribution. The cruisers are medium-size to large dragonflies with dark, long and thin abdomens with small posterior clubs; the eyes are usually bright green. They are frequently observed over rivers, streams or along lake shores. The flight is fast and powerful. The Macromiidae are sometimes included in the Corduliidae.
