Mojarra (Gerreidae) |
The Gerreidae (8 genera and 53 species) are a family of small silvery fishes distributed in shallow coastal waters of tropical and subtropical seas nearly worldwide; some species enter brackish waters and occasionally river mouths. Scaly head; protractile mouth; dorsal and anal fins with a sheath of scales along base; deeply forked tail; up to 35 cm in length. Mojarras feed on various benthic invertebrates excavated from sand or silt.
