Gerres cinereus occurs in subtropical and tropical waters of the Western Atlantic from Bermuda and Florida to north-eastern Brazil, including the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea. It inhabits shallow coastal waters over sandy bottoms, seagrass beds, and vicinity of coral reefs; enters mangroves, brackish and sometimes freshwaters; at depths 1-20 m. Silvery with six or seven faint vertical bars; pelvic fins yellow; up to 30-40 cm in total length; weight up to 530 g. This species feeds on benthic invertebrates such as worms, small crustaceans and gastropods, often excavating them from the sediment.
