Holacanthus tricolor occurs in the Western Atlantic Ocean from Bermuda to Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), and in the Caribbean Sea; less common in the Gulf of Mexico. It is found in coral and rocky reefs at depths 3-90 m. Juveniles are often associated with the fire corals (Milleporidae). Adults are up to 30 cm in length; anterior portion of the body, the pectoral, pelvic and caudal fins are yellow; the rest is black; blue iris. The juvenile is yellow with a black spot on the posterior part of the body. Rock Beauty feeds on sponges, tunicates, other invertebrates and algae.
