Eastern Mexico mangroves |
From Ría Lagartos to Cabo Catoche, including Isla Holbox, on the northern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula. This area encompasses estuaries, coastal lagoons, and sand dunes. Red Mangroves (Rhizopora mangle) and Black Mangroves (Avicennia germinans) occur throughout the ecoregion, reaching up to 10 m in height in some areas. The climate is sub-humid with ca. 880 mm of rain on average. Mean temperature is +26.4°C. Avifauna includes ca. 300 species. This ecoregion holds the largest nesting population of Caribbean Flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber) in Mexico, and also, important colonies of herons, egrets, spoonbills and other waterbirds. Green Turtles (Chelonia mydas) nest on the beaches, and laying females are sometimes hunted by Jaguars (Panthera onca). The mangroves provide a nursery for at least 80 species of fish, and also support a variety of mollusks, crustaceans, and other invertebrates.
