Tricolored Bumble Bee (Bombus ternaries) Say, 1837

 

Synonyms: Bombus ornatus, orange-belted bumblebee

 

 

Bombus ternarius is common in Canada (from Yukon to Nova Scotia) and the northeastern United States; although it was recorded as far south as Georgia, it is rarely observed south of Pennsylvania. This species is associated with stands of goldenrods (Solidago) and other Asteraceae in open woodlands and meadows, but also forages on Rubus, Vaccinium, and Asclepias. It flies from May to October.
