The Mantispidae are known as mantidflies, mantispids or mantis-flies. There are 44 genera with ca. 410 species, mostly in the tropics and subtropics. The adults are predatory, and mostly nocturnal. They are mantis-like in appearance, with the first pair of legs adapted for catching and gripping insect prey. Some species are wasp mimics.
