Coyote is distributed widely throughout North America, Mexico and Central America. It was historically restricted to the Great Plains and Mexico, but expanded into its current range following forest clearance and other habitat modifications during the 19th century. Coyotes inhabit most of available habitats and are abundant throughout their range. They are generalist predators feeding on a variety of mammals, ranging from mice to deer, but also birds, amphibians, insects, berries, as well as carrion.
Canis latrans is closely related to Gray Wolf (Canis lupus) and Eastern Wolf (Canis lycaon or Canis lupus lycaon), and some authorities consider all coyotes occurring in Eastern North America to be recent or ancient hybrids of mixed coyote-wolf parentage, calling it Eastern Coyote (Canis latrans var.) or Coywolf.
