Martes pennanti ranges widely across northern North America from south-eastern Alaska and British Columbia to Nova Scotia and the New England; it reaches Utah and California in the Rocky Mountains. Fishers occur primarily in dense coniferous or mixed forests, generally avoiding disturbed areas. The name “fisher” is misleading as the animal is not known to eat fish. Martes pennanti preys on small to medium-sized mammals and birds, preferring Snowshoe Hare (Lepus americanus). It is one of the few predators of the North American Porcupine (Erethizon dorzatum). Fishers also eat carrion (as illustrated below), and occasionally berries and mushrooms.
