Striped Skunk (Mephitis mephitis) (Schreber, 1776) |
Striped Skunk occurs throughout most of southern Canada and the United States and into northern Mexico. This is a ubiquitous species inhabiting a variety of habitats, but with preference for agricultural lands and forest edge; it also frequents urban areas. Striped Skunks feed mostly on insects, but also catch small vertebrates, and eat some vegetable matter. Mephitis mephitis and other skunks are notorious for their ability to spray an odorous liquid when threatened. Some taxonomists place skumls in the family of their own, the Mephitidae.
