Northern Raccoon (Procyon lotor)

 

Synonyms: Procyon gloveralleni, Procyon insularis, Procyon maynardi, Procyon minor, Ursus lotor, Raccoon, Common Raccoon (North America), North American Raccoon

 

 

Procyon lotor is native throughout North America from central Canada to Panama. It also occurs in the Bahamas and some islands in the Caribbean, and has been introduced in several European countries and Japan. Whether the Caribbean populations were native or introduced by the Amerindians is still debatable. Raccoons are most common in deciduous forests, swamps, mangroves, and near marshes, but occurs in other habitats where water is available, including farmland and cities. Procyon lotor is an opportunistic omnivore feeding on invertebrates, fruits, nuts, small mammals, bird eggs and nestlings, frogs, fishes, and refuse. It is mostly nocturnal.
