Raccoons and allies (Procyonidae) |
The Procyonidae includes the raccoons, ringtails, coatis, kinkajous, olingos, and the red panda (although the latter is often placed in a family of its own, Ailuridae). The family encompasses 7 genera and 19 species. Procyonids inhabit a wide range of environments in the Americas, with most species in the Neotropics; the red panda is confined to Himalayans and the adjacent mountain ranges in East Asia. Most species are well adapted to tree-climbing, and are generally omnivorous.
