Erinaceidae contains the hedgehogs (Erinaceinae) of Eurasia and Africa and the gymnures (Galericinae) of South-East Asia. Hedgehogs have a cover of sharp spines protecting the upper body and flanks. The majority of species are nocturnal and omnivorous, feeing on insects, other invertebrates, carrion, and occasionally seeds and fruit. The family contains 12 genera and 43 species.
