Paraechinus hypomelas is widely distributed in Iran, Arabian Peninsula, and southern parts of Central Asia (Map). It prefers riverine, semi-desert and desert habitats with clay and loess soils. Brandt's Hedgehog digs burrows or occupies abandoned tunnels of large rodents, or crevices. It feeds mainly on insects, including large beetles and locusts, but also small reptiles, rodents, and carrion. This species hibernates in the northern part of its range.
