Hares, Rabbits and Pikas (Lagomorpha)

The order includes two living families: the Leporidae (hares and rabbits) and the Ochotonidae (pikas); 12 genera and 92 species in total. Lagomorphs differ from rodents by having a second pair of peg-like incisors directly behind the large pair of incisors in the upper jaw. They occupy a wide range of habitats throughout most of the world, but were naturally absent from southern South America, the Caribbean, Madagascar, Australasia, Pacific islands, and Antarctica. However, several species have been introduced and successfully colonized parts of Australia and South America, causing disruption of native ecosystems, especially on the former continent. Lagomorphs are herbivorous, feeding on grasses, forbs, and shoots and bark of shrubs and trees.
