Hares and Rabbits (Leporidae) |
The Leporidae are small to medium size mammals native to all the continents except South America, Australia and Antarctica; the family includes 11 genera and 63 species. They inhabit forests, grasslands, deserts, wetlands, tundra and other habitats. Hares and rabbits are adapted for rapid movement; they have long hind legs, long and mobile ears, and large eyes. Although usually greyish-brown, some species living in areas seasonally covered with snow may turn white in winter. Hares and rabbits feed on a wide range of forbs and grasses, also stripping the bark off young trees. Many species are crepuscular or nocturnal.
