Manatees (Trichechidae)

The Trichechidae encompass one genus and 3 living species of manatees. These are large aquatic mammals found in the shallow coastal waters, rivers and swamps of Florida, the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean, South America, and West Africa. Manatees grow up to 4 m in length, and may weigh as much as 600 kg; larger and heavier individuals were recorded historically. All three species are herbivores, feeding on sea grasses and other aquatic plants.
