Algonquin Highlands Ontario, Canada

 

 

Algonquin Provincial Park is the largest provincial park in southern Ontario (7,653 km²), established in 1893. It is located in the Eastern Forest-Boreal Transition Forest zone, in Algonquin Highlands (150-590 m), south of the Ottawa River in Ontario. The park has a humid continental climate with cold, snowy winters (average -15°C) and warm summers (av. +18°C). Annual precipitation is ca. 810 mm year. Fauna includes 53 species of mammals, 272 species of birds, 14 species of reptiles, 17 species of amphibians, 54 species of fish, and at least 7,000 species of insects. Some boreal species (e.g., Moose, Spruce Grouse, Gray Jay, and Boreal Chickadee) are near the southern limit of their distribution in Ontario. Other wildlife of notice includes American Black Bear, American Marten, North American Beaver, White-tailed Deer, and Eastern Wolf. There are ca. 1,100 taxa of flowering plants. Old growth White Pine, Sugar Maple, Yellow Birch and Eastern Hemlock are common. The park is renowned for its “fall colours”, when leaves of deciduous trees turn to various shades of red, yellow, and orange in the early autumn. Although Algonquin Provincial Park is classified as a protected area, industrial logging continues within its boundaries (65.3% of the park is open to logging). Hunting and trapping continues in some sections of the park.
