Acer rubrum is one of the most common and widespread deciduous trees of eastern and central North America. Its range extends from southeastern Manitoba to Newfoundland, southwest to eastern Texas, and south to Florida; from sea level to ca. 900 m. Red Maple grows well in a wide range of soils, in a variety of habitats, from dry slopes to swamps, but is most often associated with eastern deciduous forest. It is a medium to large sized tree, reaching 20-30 metres in height, and ca. 50-80 cm in diameter; longevity is ca. 100-150 years. This species has both male and female flowers, red in colour. The dry winged fruit, called samaras, are wind dispersed. Red Maple is best known for the vivid red, scarlet, orange and yellow foliage attained in autumn, and forming (along with Sugar Maple and few other species) the spectacular “fall colors” of the eastern woodlands.
