Mountain Maple (Acer spicatum)

Acer spicatum occurs in northeastern North America from Saskatchewan to Newfoundland and in the Appalachian Mountains, south to northern Georgia. This species grows in rich, well-drained soils, e.g., on rocky hillsides, in ravines, and along streams in deciduous and mixed forest. It is a shrub or a small tree growing to 3-8 m in height. The fruit is a paired samara. The leaves turn bright yellow to red in autumn.
