Apocynaceae (Dogbane) |
The Apocynaceae includes trees, shrubs, herbs, succulents, and vines distributed mostly in the tropics and subtropics of Asia, Africa, Australia, and the Americas. Many species of this family are tropical rainforest trees. Other Apocynaceae grow in savannas and deserts; species found in temperate area are mostly perennial herbs. The family includes ca. 200 genera and 3,200 species. The Asclepiadoideae (milkweed) have been recently included in Apocynaceae, bringing the number of genera and species to 415 and ca. 4,600, respectively.
