Droseraceae (Sundew)

The Droseraceae is a small family of carnivorous herbs, with three genera and 187 contemporary species. Most species belong to the genus Drosera, the true sundews. The Droseraceae supplement their nutrient intake by capturing and digesting small invertebrates. It allows these plants to thrive in nutrient-deficient areas, e.g., sphagnum bogs and fens. Drosera spp. secrete a sticky substance from their leaves that traps prey. The latter genus is widely distributed in tropical and temperate regions nearly worldwide. The other two genera, Dionaea and Aldrovanda, have limited distribution, and contain only one extant species each.
