Chrysothemis pulchella is widespread in Central and northern South America from Nicaragua to the Amazon basin; also in the West Indies. It grows in moist lowland forests, usually in shade. This is a terrestrial herb, 40-90 cm in height. The stem is thick and succulent, densely pubescent. The leaves are lanceolate, elliptic to ovate, with dentate margins; dark-green with purple tint. The flowers are arranged in an umbel of 3-9; the calyx and corolla are tubular, orange to red, and yellow, with red stripes or spots, respectively. The fruit is a capsule.
