Salvia coccinea is an annual or perennial herb ranging from the southeastern United States and Mexico to Brazil and northern Argentina; also in the Caribbean; introduced to Hawaii. This species is usually found on sandy soils in coastal plains, e.g., in thornscrub, chaparral, open woods, etc. In the southern United States it flowers from February through October.
