Orchidaceae (Orchids) |
The Orchidaceae is one of the two largest families of flowering plants (the other one is Asteraceae), and includes 763 genera with ca. 28,000 species, i.e., nearly 10% of all known Angiosperms. The majority of orchids are perennial epiphytes, growing in trees or shrubs in the tropics and subtropics. Most of temperate species are terrestrial, found in wetlands, forests, and grasslands. Some species are lithophytes, growing on rocks.
