Araucariaceae (Araucaria) |
The Araucariaceae are an ancient family of coniferous trees with 4 extant genera and 39 living species presently confined to the Southern Hemisphere (New Caledonia, Australia, New Zealand, and southern South America); several species reach into the Indo-Malayan Archipelago. These are very tall evergreen trees, growing to 60 m in height; some obtain large stem diameters (up to 4.9 m), although very few trees of that size remain. The trunks are columnar; the branching is usually horizontal and tiered. The leaves are either small, needle-like, or large, broadly ovate. The cones (weighing up to 6.5 kg) and seed are among the largest among conifers.
