The gymnosperms (Gymnospermae) are a group of seed-producing plants which includes conifers (Pinophyta), cycads (Cycadophyta), gnetophytes (Gnetophyta), and the Ginkgo (Ginkgophyta). Overall, there are 12 families, 83 genera with a total of ca. 1,080 known species.
