Hooker, 1844

Synonyms: Dicksonia gigantea, Dicksonia karsteniana, Balantium sellowianum, (see The Plant List for more details), xaxim, samambaiaçu

This species ranges from southern Mexico to northern Argentina; up to ca. 1,600 m. Some authorities restrict D. sellowiana to the Atlantic Forest of southeastern Brazil, eastern Paraguay, northern Argentina, and Uruguay. It is one of the most characteristic plants of the Araucaria angustifolia forest. The stem of D. sellowiana is erect and hairy, several metres in height; the fronds are ca. 2 m long. In Brazil, this species is considered endangered because of the excessive harvest.
