Spicebush Swallowtail (Papilio troilus)

The Spicebush Swallowtail occurs in the eastern USA and southern Ontario in Canada. It is found in deciduous woods or near swamps, but also in fields and along roadsides. The caterpillar of Papilio troilus feeds on leaves of Spicebush (Lindera benzoin) or Sassafras (Sassafras albidum), but also several othwer species of the Lauraceae. This species flies from April to October in the north, and between March and December in the south.
