Prominent Moths (Notodontidae) |
The family Notodontidae encompasses long-winged and heavy-bodied grey or brown moths. They resemble the Owlet Moths (Noctuidae) although these two families are not closely related. The prominents hold wings across the back of the body while resting, resembling dead leaves or seeds. Many species have a tuft of hair on the trailing edge of the forewing which protrudes upwards at rest, adding to camouflage. The adults do not feed. The Notodontidae are found throughout the world, but they are most diverse in tropical areas, particularly in the Neotropics. The family includes ca. 3,800 described species.
