Jumping Mice (Zapodinae) |
The Zapodinae is a subfamily of the Dipodidae, and encompasses 3 genera and 5 species. Two genera, Zapus and Napaeozapus, are restricted to North America, and Eozapus to China. The jumping mice are found in meadows, swamps, savanna, and forests. The Zapodinae are yellowish-brown on top, with a white underside, elongated hind limbs, and a long tail (up for 60% of the total length). If disturbed, they run away making long leaps. Their food consists of seeds, fruits, fungi, and insects. In winter, jumping mice hibernate in underground burrows; they can also enter stupor during cold weather at other time of the year.
