Geomys bursarius is a fossorial rodent found in prairies, savanna, pastures, and agricultural land across the Great Plains of North America, from Manitoba (Canada) to Texas, and from Wyoming to western Indiana. Plains Pocket Gopher prefers deep moist sands and alluvial soils, where it digs extensive tunnel systems, pushing the loose dirt to the surface, thus creating mounds. In the Texas Panhandle, this species also inhabits clay-loam soils. Geomys bursarius feeds on roots, tubers, succulent stems, etc. Several taxa that formerly were considered to be subspecies of G. bursarius are now recognized as distinct species (G. attwateri, G. arenarius, G. breviceps, G. knoxjonesi, and G. texensis).
